Compass Box Crimson Casks Blended Malt Scotch Whisky

Compass Box Crimson Casks originates from Scotland and was introduced as an essential pillar of the brand's permanent "Core Four" lineup, alongside Nectarosity, The Peat Monster, and Orchard House. Master Whiskymaker James Saxon designed this expression to celebrate the "magic of metamorphosis" that occurs when rich spirit interacts with heavily seasoned wood. It acts as an unapologetically bold, dessert-forward homage to the house's "Cask is King" philosophy.

Spirit Description

This expression is a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky matured heavily in first-fill Oloroso sherry-seasoned butts and red wine casks, with supporting elements from ex-bourbon and custom French oak barrels. It presents a deep, burnt burgundy or crimson-tinted amber appearance with a rich, oily body.

  • The Component Blend: Composed of single malt parcels from distilleries including Glen Moray, Benrinnes, and Teaninich. It also features a significant portion (around 35%) of single malt from a distillery "near the town of Aberlour," and a small percentage of a Highland malt blend finished in toasted French oak.

  • Aroma: Powerful and intense. It opens with sweet, fizzy dark cherries, pomegranate, molasses, and dark chocolate brownie, accented by deep notes of spicy oak, clove, and cardamom.

  • Palate: Rich, creamy, and velvety. The entry delivers a punchy wave of chili dark chocolate, plum jam, and redcurrant jelly. This builds into a complex mid-palate of stewed fruits, hoisin sweetness, and a buttery, savory crunch.

  • Finish: Exceptionally long, warm, and highly satisfying. It leaves lingering notes of rooibos tea, honey-roasted cashews, brown sugar, and a comforting, dry cinnamon spice.

  • ABV: 46% (Natural colour, non-chill filtered)

Accolades

Crimson Casks has been widely praised by enthusiasts and critics alike for successfully taking over the mantle from some of the brand's historical sherried favorites (like The Story of the Spaniard or Spice Tree). Industry panels, including reviewers at The Whiskey Wash and WhiskyNotes, have lauded the blend for its unapologetic intensity, rich mouthfeel, and excellent value within the craft blended malt category.

Food Pairing

Because Crimson Casks is blended for sheer abundance and bold flavor rather than quiet subtlety, it performs spectacularly alongside intense food profiles:

  • Cheese: It is practically screaming for a food pairing—specifically heavy, pungent options like an artisanal blue cheese or a sharp, crystalline aged cheddar.

  • Dessert: The distillery explicitly recommends drizzling a splash of Crimson Casks directly over premium vanilla bean ice cream to unlock hidden flavors of fig and cinnamon. It also perfectly matches a dense slice of chocolate fudge cake or dark cherry tarts.

  • Savoury: Its unique savory undertones allow it to stand up beautifully next to rich, umami dishes like slow-roasted pork belly or duck legs glazed in plum sauce.
